    A Quiet Morning

This quiet Sunday morning I was sitting in the backyard
    watching the birds
    thinking how peaceful it was

I heard the distant sound of an approaching helicopter
It gradually became louder and I thought
this is not an ordinary helicopter

Then I saw two massive 100 foot-long Chinooks
flying in close formation low over my house
each with tandem blades 25 feet long
    and louder than thunder
I knew they could carry two dozen troops each

I wondered if the Martians had invaded overnight
or if a civil war had begun
    They must have circled around
because after ten minutes they made another pass over my house
even lower this time barely clearing the tree tops
I tried to think if I had done something
that would justify an army assault

For a few seconds I realized what it was like to be a soldier on the ground
waiting for rockets to be fired in my direction
or 48 troops catapulting down ropes to land in my garden
    M4A1 rifles at the ready

Actually somewhat shaken I went inside
    just in case
but at the same time feeling just a little safer

Wow, that could be really frightening!

My first thought was that they were looking for a good place for coffee.
