    What The Spiders Know

They go where no one does
    where even the moonlight doesn’t

Three hundred eighty million years ago
they began to build their webs
    or simply waited to jump
    with eight eyes or six

    Maybe the webs came later
    no one is sure

    Eight legs spin and spin
until the brilliant web is done
a perfect orb just in time for the night
and the coming of the tiny flies
    or whatever else is coming
for the feast of the spider
    that must have thought ahead
    as I should have
